Press Release From the U. S. Open, Saturday March 14th, at 5:00 pm EDT:
THE 2020 US OPEN AND ISKA WORLD MARTIAL ARTS CHAMPIONSHIPS CONTINUES TO BE SCHEDULED FOR JUNE 25-27 AT WALT DISNEY WORLD IN ORLANDO, FLORIDA, USA.
The US Open Staff and Organizing Committee are in constant contact with Disney’s on-site Health Department. Disney has chosen to temporarily close both Disneyland in California and Disney World in Orlando beginning March 16th. Disneyland will reopen March 28th and Disney World will reopen on March 30th.Disney stressed that although no cases of coronavirus were reported at either Park, and neither park falls under any government restrictions on size of gatherings, both parks were briefly closing to enable them to put into place additional safeguards designed to minimize the chances of any coronavirus transmission among it’s customers.
Disney Resort Hotels and Convention Facilities, as well as attractions like Disney Springs in Orlando, would remain open during this period.
Disney World’s Coronado Springs Resort & Convention Center has been the home of the US Open for the past 21 years. This year’s event will again be broadcast live worldwide, including ESPN in the United States. Competitor Registrations for both the NASKA 6A tournament and the professional ISKA World Championships have been well ahead of the pace of previous years, as have hotel room reservations at the Coronado Springs Resort, especially at the new highly-publicized Gran Destino Tower.
In discussions with Disney, The US Open Organizing Committee has determined there is no need at this time to consider postponing the US Open until later in the summer. Florida continues to be low on the scale of coronavirus cases per capita among U.S. states, with only 77 cases among 22 million residents, with the great majority (51) of those cases being in the South Florida and lower west coast areas of the state. Orlando and central Florida, where Disney World is located, has been nearly devoid of any sign of the coronavirus to this point.
The US Open will provide weekly progress reports through it’s website, social media, and email campaigns, regarding the status of the COVID-19 virus in Florida, and any pertinent updates from Disney. The US Open and Disney will strive to remain safe places for the entire family to have a wonderful and memorable competition and vacation experience.
The US Open Organizing Committee and Executive Team is, as always, available anytime for any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
THE US OPEN EXECUTIVE TEAM
